The main objective is investigation and R&D studies for new silicon-based photo-detectors (SiPM) and their integration in HEP detectors. Group is a longstanding leader in radiation damage studies in silicon for high energy physics experiments and photon science. We study radiation induced defects in the silicon band gap and their effects on basic sensor properties like dark current, effective space charge concentration and trapping of charge carriers.

The project MODES_SNM is aiming at the design, construction, testing, and qualification of a mobile system for the detection of Special Nuclear Material (SNM). It consequently addresses directly the Development of detection capabilities of difficult to detect radioactive sources and nuclear materials. And the RADICAL (RADon: Integrating Capabilities of Associated Labs) A project approved within the INTERREG program of cross-border cooperation between Italy & Switzerland (Feb. 2011-Feb. 2014) - Development of a system for wireless transmission of data from a cluster of “real-time” radon monitoring RADIM Devices, - Off-the record: Monitoring of a large geographical area of geological interest by a network of remotely controlled devices.

Main activities and responsibilities include: The group conducts experiments into the fundamental nature of matter and the laws which govern its properties and is currently involved in a number of front line collaborative research projects with research opportunities in the ATLAS and LHCb experiments at CERN. My main responsibility is to study and test new detectors from e2v Company for strong radiation harsh environment. - Working with pixel and strip detectors to obtain the main parameters of new detectors and comparing them with previous results for Hamamatsu and Micron.

Main activities and responsibilities include; - Within RAPSODI (European founded project - coop 32993) I was involved in the characterization and qualification of Silicon Photo-Multiplier (SiPM), the state-of-the-art solid state sensors with single photon detection capability. - A direct collaboration with one of the main developers (SENSL, a RAPSODI consortium partner) was ongoing and a comparative analysis with products from different suppliers had been performed. - A full protocol had been developed, based on the measurement of dark count rate, amplification, dynamic range, quantum detection efficiency and optical cross talk; moreover, the temperature dependence of the main figures had been studied and the spectral response study was done. - Results confirm the enormous potential of this new class of sensors, both for intense photon fluxes as well as for a low plurality of light quanta, for both continuous and pulsed sources. - Co-inventor of European patent EP 2056127 (A2). Patent and related techno- logical process was developed for PTW-Freiburg GmbH, Germany.

KTH (Royal Institute of Technology), Stockholm, Sweden. Main activities and responsibilities include; - I have been assembling x-ray imaging equipment with very high resolutions in energy, contrast and position. In particular I have been responsible for acquiring and evaluating x-ray images with this new equipment and programming the data acquisition system. - The main part of my work was the creation and testing of an algorithm for Application Specific Integrated Circuits with optimization to maximize the signal-to-noise ratio and to find the optimum parameters for ASIC exploitation in mammography units. - I have been involved in the testing of a digital mammography system with 22000 channels of low noise electronics, containing approx 180 ASIC tuned with the above mentioned algorithm. - Participated in setting up a startup company Mamea Imaging AB created to commercialize the digital mammography system. Mamea Imaging AB was a successful venture acquired by SECTRA in 2004.
