My duties included: collecting success-stories for inter-agency conflict prevention publication with focus on governance, rule of law and peacebuilding; providing a framework for preparation of Guidance and Learning Unit’s main knowledge management products: such as practice notes, lessons learned studies literature reviews, collation of good practices on policy strategies and etc; taking notes and drafting reports of meetings, including annual retreat of Peace and Development Advisors (PDAs); drafting policy briefs on national policy developments to support mediation activities in case-studies conducted by mediation specialists; organizing Brownbag lunches connected to DPA’s work, including women leadership in conflict resolution and etc. Finally, I prepared a note on DPA’s capacity building initiatives tackling ways to eliminate conflict-related sexual violence, sexual discrimination and abuse at work-place, including high-level advocacy, field trainings and etc.

In my capacity as a primary liaison for and communication with political and military representatives of the Russian Federation to the Syria-related issues, facilitated communication with Russian co-chairs of the International Syria Support Group (ISSG), regularly acting as an interpreter in bilateral meetings between members of Russian and American delegations to humanitarian and ceasefire taskforces; - Supported SE’s team during weekly ISSG meetings by analyzing major humanitarian and policy trends of the Russian government as ISSG co-chairs; - drafted extensive reports and timely updates reviewing Russian-language media reactions to Syria-related developments; - complied research documents and briefing notes regarding major security issues and policy developments in the greater MENA region, and more particularly in Syria and neighboring states; - within the period of intra-Syrian talks, I was assisting SE’s office by drafting talking points and background notes for preparatory consultations for the development of diplomatic strategies and policy guidelines, as well as assisted in organizing and supporting the strategic policy dialogues to advance women’s participation in peace and security in Syria as part of the “Track II” negotiations; - took minutes and prepared summaries and analytical reports of the meetings between SE’s office and Syrian counterparts, as well as supporting both governmental and civil society delegations in their daily activities during the talks.

Political Affairs intern at the Office of the Special Envoy for Syria
In my capacity as an intern at the Operational Centre for monitoring of violations of the regime of Cessation of Hostilities (CoH), I was: - maintaining up-to-date knowledge related to security and political developments in Syria and the greater MENA region; - collecting and reporting alleged incidents of the CoH violations and conveying this information to the Russian side; - providing consecutive interpretation during high-level meetings; - preparing regular newsletters of the Russian media on the Syria-related issues; - drafting minutes and summaries of high-level negotiations and civil society meetings; - assisting in receiving Syrian delegations for their participation in intra-Syrian talks; - facilitating coordination between Russian and the American teams by assisting with daily tasks and ad-hoc requests. In the result of this internship, I developed a regularly updated virtual database on ongoing clashes in the areas under the ceasefire agreement. This tool allowed to maintain better visibility and foresee areas with the potentially deteriorating humanitarian situation in order to secure humanitarian aid delivery.
